I love sugar

Are you a sugar addict?

Hi, my name is Sammi and I am a sugar addict. And this is probably why my pants don’t fit.

I am one of those people who order dessert first and then order my main meal at a restaurant. Although I only take two teaspoons of sugar in my coffee, I make up for it throughout the day by chomping on chocolate and pastries.

On Carte Blanche (broadcast on 30 May), sugar addiction was the topic of discussion where new research suggests sugar may be as addictive as hard drugs. There is still a lot of speculation around this topic and some experts are not completely convinced, and some say it is more like an addiction to food rather than just sugar.

Personally I do believe that people can become as addicted to sugar as someone using heroin. I crave sugar all the time and when I eat sweet treats I instantly feel better. When I am stressed I believe something sweet will put me to ease and it does.

I will admit I do sometimes sneak a choccie in the car before I get home so no one sees and I am always looking for an excuse to buy something “nice”.

But, thinking of booking myself into rehab for wanting to eat sweets sounds a bit crazy. Maybe as more information becomes available on this topic, people will begin to better understand this new addiction and hopefully kick the habit.

Are you addicted to sugar and do you think it can be compared to drug or alcohol addiction?
