Danger in disguise

JOBURG – Parents need to know what their children are really doing.

An addiction can ruin your whole life.

Being addicted to drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, food or anything else can leave you helpless and your life spiralling out of control.

Drug addiction seems to be the most terrifying and has recently been in the spotlight. Drug dealers are targeting younger, school-going children and are openly selling it in the same vicinity as the schools and taxi ranks.

The drugs are also disguised in a more appealing form such as strawberry (or other flavoured) sherbet straws. I assume this makes it easier for the dealers to get the children hooked and for them to hide it from their parents.

These straws are not laced with mickey-mouse drugs, crystal methamphetamine aka TIK is being used which is very addictive and dangerous.

In my day, dagga was the drug everyone started experimenting with, but nowadays kids are jumping straight to hard-core drugs.

Most parents don’t know what these different drugs are, what the effects are, what they look like and just how dangerous they are. I think parents need to be more informed and know what their children are doing, not just drop their children off at the mall thinking they are innocently going to watch a movie.

Teenagers of today are a lot smarter than we think and are faced with many difficult choices on a daily basis. And yes, the police should be cracking down on the drug dealers and schools have a responsibility to prevent children in becoming involved in drugs, but it is ultimately the parent’s responsibility.
