It is with great disgust that I read about a brothel in Ontdekkers Park on your website this morning (House of displeasure on Finch Street, 20 October). The way you marketed the story, you posed us a question: Will I live next door to a brothel knowingly?
Even imagining a positive response to the question sickens me. It isn’t fathomable that anyone would knowingly invite such despicable deeds to their neighbourhood, absolutely ignoring the health of their families, the mental health of their children and husbands and the health of their community. Who knows what disgusting diseases these devilish seductresses carry, or the pimps that manage them? Who wants condoms on their pavements and in their trash cans? It’s a health risk!
Letting a brothel exist next to your family home means endangering your family in more ways that just medically. Say a client doesn’t pay up for his dirty deeds and a weapon gets pulled out to beat it out of him? I’ve heard that prostitutes are kept in prostitution by getting and keeping them addicted to hard drugs like heroin. If it’s not being made next door, some slumlord probably is delivering it to your debauching neighbours — are you comfortable with that? I for one am not.
Then I’m made to think of my teenage daughter. She’s not blind to the sick goings-on in this world, she’ll know exactly what is happening next door. Are you ok with your daughter being exposed to that? Being shown that in the real world, despite what she’s taught, women are marginalised and degraded by men?
Our community is already rotten with ignored evils, corruption and drugs.
I do not want an example like that set to my daughter, son or husband — and shame on anyone that sweeps it under the carpet.
