OPINION: The boss’s lonely seat

The boss’s seat in a small or medium business is one of the toughest and loneliest positions.

The MD of a large company has a professional board of directors, each with expert skills in their own fields, and each is constantly available to their superior. Not so for the owner or MD of a smaller enterprise. Often he/she cannot afford the cost of professional executive directors and on a daily basis must deal single-handedly with the countless problems and headaches of running a company.

In many cases such a boss lacks management skills having not managed anything before starting his  business, and although he may know his business, he may not always know “business”not knowing what he doesn’t know. He is constantly under pressure and severe time constraints.

A business director such as this may have started his/her business as a result of a dream – or even an argument. Somewhere down the line the original vision may have been lost, and the business is created without a formal business plan.

Get Support

For a small to medium business director, connecting with other business executives with whom he/she can talk things through can prove very fruitful – sharing problem areas and related issues with others who have similar experiences will assist in achieving aims and objectives.

Such support can come through a specifically designed business support programme where in effect the lonely and frustrated boss acquires the services of a board of directors which does not exist in his company.

The boss acquires a major advantage by having top experienced business people with specialist skills working alongside him to assist in whatever is necessary. He retains full control of his company while at the same time can rely on the advice of experts at his disposal, who provide independent and unbiased advice and views.

Thus the various areas of need in the company can be attended to with specific focus and attention provided by relevant specialists, thereby providing the business director with skills which he lacks, ensuring a healthy and successful business.
