OPINION: Hibiscus: a natural hair toner

Today’s hair dyes are filled with harsh chemicals which can do serious damage to your hair. Here’s a natural hair toner you can use to achieve a beautiful burgundy or black cherry colour. It will not only give you a beautiful cherry red shade with a deep shine but it will also leave your hair super soft and full of volume.

To make a natural red hair dye, mix three to four tablespoons of hibiscus petal powder to henna powder. Each 100 grams added will deepen your red tones. Add red teas, paprika or half a lemon to further boost red tones.

Hibiscus hair rinse for dark hair:

1. Combine two cups (500ml) distilled water with five tablespoons of dried Hibiscus and Calendula flowers (or just use ten tablespoons hibiscus) in a pot and bring to a boil on the stove.
2. Let steep for 1 to 3 hours.
3. Strain out and pour into a large dark coloured container. When you want to use the mixture add two tablespoons apple cider vinegar before pouring it over your hair after conditioning.
4. Massage the mixture gently into your scalp and then rinse. Be careful not to get the mixture in your eyes as it will sting.

To achieve the best results, apply the dye regularly.

Please note that this hair dye/toner will not wash easily and will last for one to three months before the colour starts to fade. If you would like the colour to fade sooner soak your hair in green tea to release the dye.

Hibiscus is best kept in the freezer for ultimate freshness over long periods. If stored in the fridge it will last a week, and may go stale, stagnant and mouldy if left at room temperature.

The wonderful thing about natural hair colours is that they enhance what you already have, and the result is beautiful, healthy, shiny hair.
