Esperanza gets greener

AfriForum embarks on green initiative at Laerskool Esperanza.

AfriForum Roodepoort celebrated Arbor Week by planting three Yellow Stinkwood trees at Laerskool Esperanza on September 28.

Vice-chairperson Ronnie Britz stated, “These trees symbolise growth, renewal and community spirit, benefiting future generations.”

The initiative also aimed to foster a strong relationship between AfriForum and the school. The trees were planted at the Grade R and Grade One playgrounds, and one at the school’s main playground.

Speaking to the Roodepoort Record, Ronnie emphasised that the tree planting marks a first step in AfriForum’s commitment to environmental and community development projects.

“This is just the beginning of many projects where we are going to grow together. We plan to undertake continuous sustainable projects, including recycling initiatives to support less fortunate children at the school.”

By partnering with Esperanza, AfriForum seeks to promote environmental awareness and unity. The trees will provide shade and beautify the school grounds while serving as a lasting reminder of the importance of sustainability and community spirit.

Deputy principal of the school, Francois Pretorius, said the planting of trees is a good initiative because it promotes sustainability and the importance of preserving nature for future generations.

“Our natural resources are depleting daily. We have been cutting down trees and mining everywhere. If we do not have projects like these in 100 years to come, our kids will not have what we have at the moment.

“Hopefully the trees will deepen their appreciation of nature. We will also put dates next to the trees so that we can always remember when they were planted,” Francois said.

Francois also mentioned that he spoke to the Grade R and Grade One teachers to incorporate this as part of their lessons.
