Young talents on display

Discovery Primary School hosts a showcase aimed at encouraging and literature in schools.

Talent and creativity took centre stage once again at Discovery Primary Full Service School when they hosted their annual showcase, themed ‘A Night at the Library’ with senior citizens from various elderly homes as their audience.

On September 13, the audience was transported to a vibrant library, where dance, poetry, drama and music came together to bring beloved stories to life.

The learners were dressed in an array of colourful costumes, and some were transformed into fairies, queens, and kings; others into towering trees; and a few even became majestic elephants.

It didn’t end there; the learners also portrayed historical South African moments like Freedom Day and Youth Day through dance, heritage and music.

According to Yolandie Conradie, the organiser of this prestigious show, this event was more than just a showcase – it was a celebration of unity in diversity, leading up to Heritage Day. She says the entire school community came together, embracing their differences and shared passion for the arts.

“The inspiration for this concert came about when we identified a need for literature skills to be developed in our country amongst our youth.

“We saw it fit to allow our learners and educators to collaborate and come up with creative items by making literature come alive with poetry, coral verses, short plays, and telling stories with traditional dances like Gumboots and Isizulu cultural song and dance,” shared Yolandie.

Yolandie also mentioned that they included three languages that are taught at the school, which are English as the home language, Afrikaans as the second language, and Isizulu as an additional language.

She says they invited the elderly homes as an audience to include the community, and the feedback they received from them was brilliant.
