Learners show kindness

Horizon View Primary school learners donate a bag full of bottle caps and bread tags to QASA.

Grade Five learners from Horizon View Primary School have demonstrated an act of kindness by engaging in an awesome and worthy initiative of collecting and donating bottle caps and bread tags to the QuadPara Association of South Africa (QASA) West Rand Branch.

The branch visited the school on Tuesday, August 20, and it was represented by Hercie Blaauw, who gave social development education to the learners, explaining the significance of these items to those who are challenged differently and less fortunate.

QASA is a leading agency in South Africa when it comes to representing persons with spinal cord injuries and those who are differently enabled. According to Hercie, these items will be recycled to create a wheelchair for those in need.

Grade Five teacher and organiser of this collection Sumaya Lanie, says she encouraged this initiative because it is very close to her heart, especially as someone who has worked closely with persons with quadriplegics and paraplegics, and she saw the need for wheelchairs for those who are challenged differently.

“It was an initiative that I took knowing that the learners drink juices and cold drinks all the time, but instead of littering and throwing them away, we started having a bag where they could throw them there, and it was very successful, and the learners were very enthusiastic.

“Today we handed seven bags full of bottle caps and bread tags to those able to contribute to QASA’s project,” said Sumaya.

She concluded by saying she doesn’t see the end of it and they are going to collect to make a difference.
