Academy celebrates a term of success and adventure

The Little Forest Academy in Weltevreden Park reflects on term two.

With the third school term in full swing, Little Forest Academy of Learning is looking to make this the best term yet.

Term two saw the school go from strength to strength in all areas – from academic performance to sports and other extracurricular activities.

“This term, our learners have truly shone,” says school principal Leanne van der Merwe.

“With an impressive academic performance in the mid-year exams, the bar was set high. Special recognition goes to all of our learners who managed to obtain distinctions in their examinations.”

However, it wasn’t just academics that had the school buzzing with excitement. The standout event of the term was their Star Wars Day fundraising endeavour, held at the South African Wushu Foundation in Malcolm Road in July.

“The venue was transformed into a scene straight out of a galaxy far, far away,” she says.
“Upon entering the training hall, visitors were greeted by a massive Millennium Falcon prop dominating the wall, setting the tone for the day.

“Adding a touch of magic, a skilled magician captivated students with tricks that seemed straight from the world of the Jedi.

“The highlight of the day was a thrilling Star Wars-themed Kung-Fu performance by Protea athlete and former coach of the LFA Kung-Fu squad, Sinead Starley and our very own head girl, Kitana van der Mescht, who is a Junior Protea Kung Fu fighter.

“Their display of skill and creativity was a true highlight, blending martial arts with iconic Star Wars elements.”

The event featured impressive props and set pieces that delighted fans of all ages. The collection of Star Wars memorabilia on display was a treasure trove for enthusiasts, young and old. The excitement peaked with an incredible raffle, where lucky learner Jared Maule walked away with a fantastic prize.

“Adding to the term’s enrichment, we had the honour of hosting international author Mervyn Nel, who spoke to our learners about the significance of writing and the journey to becoming a writer.

“His visit included a session where learners posed thought-provoking questions and an engaging discussion with a panel of handpicked students known for their sharp minds and insightful queries. Mervyn’s wisdom and passion for storytelling left a lasting impression on everyone present.

“Capping off the term, our students embarked on a refreshing hike through the scenic trails of the Kloofendal Nature Reserve. This expedition provided not only a much-needed breath of fresh air but also a hands-on learning experience about the local environment.

“Mrs Van der Walt, our head of department for the Foundation Phase, guided the learners in identifying various plant species, turning the hike into an educational adventure.”

Reflecting on the term, Leanne shared; “This term has been a testament to our motto, ‘Dedication ensures success’. Our students have not only excelled academically but have also embraced the joy of learning through engaging activities. We are incredibly proud of their achievements and look forward to another term filled with growth and exploration.”
