School shoe donations bring huge smiles to learners

The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies visited Princess Primary School as part of their broader back-to-school campaign.

Teachers and learners at Princess Primary School had a visit from delegates from the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT) on March 1.

This visit formed part of the department’s broader back-to-school campaign, where learners were engaged in the digital literacy programme. The director general of DCDT, Nonkqubela Jordan-Dyani, quizzed the learners on the information given during the talk, and everyone involved was rewarded with a prize.

The Khwezi Foundation, which is an NPO, partnered with the department and identified 100 learners at the school in need of new school shoes. Yandi Makalima , the founder of the organisation, operates in the education space and seeks to empower role players such learners, teachers, and staff through social upliftment programs and by meeting the physiological needs of learners from less privileged backgrounds.

These shoes, donated by My Walk, are made from recycled medical waste and, according to Nonkqubela, are more durable than other school shoes. She used the opportunity to educate the learners about recycling as well.

Learners receiving these shoes were excited with some of them bursting into tears upon receiving such a great gift.
