Local teacher awarded the second position for technical official of the year
Discovery Primary School celebrates teacher's achievement for service excellence in sport.
A teacher at Discovery Primary School, Riyaadh Khan, received the second position of Technical Official of the Year for Service Excellence in Sport from the Joburg West Education District.
Riyaadh explained the purpose of a technical official in chess is to organise and host tournaments as well as ensure compliance with rules throughout the tournament and deal with both appeals and disputes from the players, coaches and managers.
He noticed his achievements in 2023 that were recognised for the award included being selected as Chief Arbiter at the Schools Cluster Individual Chess Tournament, as well as at the Schools D12 Individual Chess Tournament and the Schools D12 Teams Chess Tournament. He was also a Floor Arbiter at the Gauteng Individual Chess Championship and the Top Schools Gauteng Teams Championships.
He noted his other achievements for 2023 included receiving his Regional Arbiters qualification in March and submitting his three norms for Provincial Arbiter, along with being selected as the team manager of the U15 Gauteng team for the National Individual Championship, where his team won gold, he was also chosen as team manager for the Johannesburg Soncini Cohesion Games Chess. Finally, he was also Chief and Floor Arbiter for various West Rand Federation Tournaments.
