Laerskool Helderkruin excels at annual art competition

The annual competition which advocates against animal cruelty was open to Gauteng schools which saw over 2 000 entries this year.

Laerskool Helderkruin has always been a proud supporter of animal welfare and has recently taken top honours in the annual Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) Johannesburg School Poster and Poetry Competition.

According to Jessica Courtney, Laerskool Helderkruin’s marketing officer, the competition was open to all Gauteng primary schools and more than 2 000 entries were received this year.

“The main aim of the competition was to create public awareness around the organisation’s mandate and to raise funds. It is also in partnership with the ‘kindness in a tin’ project,” Jessica explained.

The theme was ‘every day is a good day to be kind to animals’ and Annette Higgs won first place in category three (grade six and seven), and Carla Steenkamp won second place in the same category. Kai-Lee van Benecke won third place in category two, (grades 3–5). All the other winners were awarded with merit prizes.

“We would also like to congratulate our art teacher Amanda Botes for inspiring, motivating, and tutoring the learners to achieve these outstanding accolades,” Jessica said.

The AACL has been protecting and caring for animals since 1956. It is South Africa’s second largest independent animal welfare organisation which relies entirely on the generosity and goodwill of the animal-loving public for financial support.

They are an organisation involved with all aspects of animal welfare and provide shelter for abandoned animals, promotes an efficient adoption programme, prosecutes animal cruelty cases, runs welfare hospitals for lower-income groups, visits underprivileged areas with fully equipped mobile clinics and regularly addresses schools and clubs on the challenges of animal welfare.
