Artist from Hoërskool Roodepoort shows off his talent at Eisteddfod

The Grade 10 learner wants to improve on his natural talent for art which he has been working on since a young age.

Aspiring artist Dante van Kradenburg, a Grade 10 learner from Hoërskool Roodepoort, walked away with awards from both Eisteddfod and the Youth Art Festival for his creative talents.

“I feel pretty amazing. It’s the second time that I’ve won awards, but this time it’s for something that I love doing. I didn’t expect to win so much though, I got a seven,” said Dante.

He noted he received a diamond award for his portrait of Trevor Noah and two diplomas for his portraits of Morgan Freeman and a surrealistic portrayal of a feminine face being dissolved in smoke. Further, he received seven trophies for most developed in art and three more certificates.

He noted he discovered his God-given talent around grade three and he has been working on improving his technique and refining his art. In grade eight he discovered his love for portraits by ‘trying something new’. He said portraits are more realistic and detailed, which he enjoys. He expressed his desire to one day open his own gallery to exhibit his works.

After school, he hopes to study art and expand on it. In addition to having his own gallery, he would like the opportunity to do graphic design or animations and even fashion design, especially for a brand such as Nike, as he explains he is a huge fan.

What he likes most about art are the colours. To others hoping to fulfill their artistic dreams he noted that art is very difficult to learn, it takes time and effort and a lot of patience. Practice is key and trying different techniques.”

His mother, Cindy-Lee, concluded, “He has always known what he wants to do, which makes things a lot easier. It has been amazing to see his creativity and watch him get better.”
