The recent spate of horrific accidents in Witpoortjie has prompted Ward 71 councillor Renè Benjamin to take urgent action.
She took to the streets on October 26, setting up a table outside the Witpoortjie Pick n Pay, to gather signatures for a petition for traffic calming measures to be put in place at strategic points throughout Witpoortjie.
According to Benjamin, there are spots throughout the area where accidents occur regularly.

“People simply don’t stop at the stop signs,” she says, adding, “Trezona Avenue has become notorious for accidents because people drive there like it’s a racetrack.
“The existing stop signs are insufficient in terms of getting people to drive slower. Many don’t even adhere to the stop signs. We can’t have more children from our community die in this way.”
At the time of the Roodepoort Record’s visit, Benjamin’s petitions had already received overwhelming support from the community with multiple pages filled with signatures.
