One fatality and multiple injured during Gordon Road horror crash

The crash involved a Mercedes-Benz truck, a Toyota panel van and a Jaguar SUV.

Both lanes of the N1 at Gordon Road were closed on Saturday, October 26 after a serious crash resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries.

According to a press statement by the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), the incident occurred after a truck, travelling along the N1 north lost control, veered across the centre meridian, collided with other vehicles, and eventually ended up on its side on the N1 south.

At the time of the Record visiting the scene, traffic was severely backed up in both directions on the N1, as well as on Gordon Road, with multiple motorists stuck on the onramp, unable to get onto, or off the highway.

The truck’s load scattered over the highway.

The truck’s load were scattered across both lanes of the highway and at least one vehicle appeared to be crushed by the truck.

According to JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla, the crash involved a Mercedes-Benz truck, a Toyota panel van and a Jaguar SUV.

“Preliminary reports indicate that the truck and panel van were travelling northbound on the N1 when the truck lost control, colliding with the panel van and dragging it across the median. The truck’s trailer subsequently landed on the Jaguar SUV, which was travelling along the N1 south.

A JMPD official investigates the cause of the accident.

“The truck driver and his passenger sustained serious injuries. They were transported to the hospital. The male panel van driver sustained slight injuries and was transported to hospital.

“Unfortunately, the female Jaguar SUV driver sustained fatal injuries.”

Fihla adds that a case of culpable homicide has been opened at the Florida Police Station.
