Community rallies behind family of slain resident

The community of Helderkruin was shaken by the murder of a respected resident during a home invasion.

The community of Helderkruin came together en masse on Thursday, October 17 in support of the family of slain resident, Stefan Meyer.

Meyer was murdered during an invasion at his home in Banket Drive on Sunday, October 13.

Residents, police officers, security companies, CPF, and local neighbourhood watch members held a sombre candlelight vigil outside the family’s home, laying flowers and placing candles outside the gate, and praying over the family that has lost a husband and father.

Meyer’s grief-stricken wife and children, supported by family members, stood inside the yard, showing their appreciation for the solidarity shown by their community.

Banket Drive was packed with vehicles and people, with Helderkloof Neighbourhood Watch members directing traffic.

Very few details about the incident have been made public by police.

Intruders managed to gain entry into the home shortly after 22:00 on Sunday and were confronted by Meyer.

A struggle ensued and Meyer was shot by one of the intruders, succumbing to his injuries on the scene.

Reaction officers from a private security provider showed up at the scene a short while later, by which time the intruders had made their escape.

A vigil was held outside the house.

“Police have opened a case of murder and house robbery for investigation and the search for suspects is underway,” says provincial police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo.
