Joburg Zoo rolls out red carpet for pensioners

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo invites all pensioners to enjoy free weekday access to the zoo throughout October.

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) will be opening its doors to pensioners for free this month. This special initiative will be running throughout October, aiming to provide senior citizens with an unforgettable experience, connecting them to the zoo’s incredible wildlife.

As part of the United Nations’ International Order Persons Month, JCPZ is honouring the theme Ageing with Dignity. With about nine per cent of South Africans aged 60 and older, this initiative promotes exercise for good health and a sense of belonging.

According to JCPZ spokesperson Jenny Moodley, the rise in chronic illnesses among senior citizens in 2024 has become a great concern, and encouraging our elders to enjoy the outdoors and maintain a well-balanced health regime is very vital. This will also help them to stretch their legs and get the right amount of exercise.

“Families are urged to bring their relatives to the zoo for ease of movement; golf carts will be available for hire inside the facility as well as a great picnic spot. This serves as a reminder to respect and support the health and fulfilment of our elders,” Moodley said.

Retirement homes and villages are encouraged to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to enjoy a day of exploration, education, and connection with the Johannesburg Zoo’s most rare and extraordinary species, including the Big 5. This limited offer is valid until October 31.
