Local scout takes on big challenge

The Just in Time Baby Sanctuary will soon have a brand new deck installed in their backyard if this local scout has his way.

Local scout Craig Slabbert took a huge task on his shoulders when he undertook to raise funds for a deck to be constructed at the Just in Time Baby Sanctuary.

According to Craig, a member of the First Discovery Scouts, the baby sanctuary has a structure that covers a part of their back garden, but the ground there is very uneven, thus preventing the staff and the children in their care from making use of the area.

“We will be building a wooden deck so they will have an even surface on which to place chairs and a table. This will provide them with a nice, covered area where they can enjoy their backyard.”

Craig has undertaken this mammoth project as part of his Community Bar, which is the third level of the Rover Advancement Programme, which involves service to the scout movement, service to oneself, and service to one’s community.

The Rovers is the final part of the Scout Youth Programme, aimed at young adults between the ages of 18 and 30.

According to Craig, the Rover Advancement Programme is all about bettering yourself as a person, by giving back to the scouting movement, and to your community and aiding in developing leadership qualities.

“For my Community Bar, I need to do a six-month community service project.

“I approached a professional company to advise me on the best way forward. They’ve helped me with the design of the structure, which will require blocks of cement that will act as the foundation of the structure.

“The frame and decking will be constructed from wood.”

Craig adds that materials for the project will cost about R20 000 to complete.

“I’ve already managed to raise around R2 000, so I still need R18 000 to buy the materials. Once the material is bought, I will work on securing the funds to do the physical construction.”
