Recovery centre renewes hope to addicts

Freedom Recovery Centre calls on members of the community to assist them so that they can continue stretching their hands to those affected by substance abuse.

The Freedom Recovery Centre is continuing to stretch its hand and make a difference for those affected by substance abuse.

Since opening its doors two years ago, the centre has become a cornerstone of the community by empowering individuals to overcome addiction and reclaim their lives.

According to Sylvester Sauls, this is a passion project that he started because he also found himself in a dark hole for 17 years, battling drug addiction and being homeless.

He says he is now determined to assist those who find themselves in similar situations by offering them a six-month recovery programme after which they should be ready to reintegrate back into society.

This programme focuses on the faith-based side of the individual, and then they work on the underlying issues or trauma, and lastly, they focus on restoring the family.

The centre also has a skills development centre where they learn skills such as welding, panel beating, carpentry, and computers.

“I started this project because I have been there myself, and at some point in my life, I related to what they are going through. I know all about wicked behaviour and how it feels to lose bonds with family; hence, we always find it important to restore bonds with the families,” he said.

In recent developments, the centre is happy to announce that they are extending their work in the community and have found themselves another working space based in Florida, at 15 Church Street.

“Finding this new space led us to start our Double Bunk and Single Mattress donation drive so that we can start running the centre. We are planning to have an office and a skills centre at the back.”

Freedom Recovery Centre thus calls on assistance from the Roodepoort community in terms of double bunks, mattresses, and any other form of help that would make the dream a reality. They are also urging people to come together to assist in the fight against drug addiction.
