Power Rangers have many eyes in the sky

Two residents generously offered to purchase two additional surveillance cameras to assist the Power Rangers with combating crime in the community.

A group of committed community members, known as the Power Rangers, work with local security companies to monitor the streets at night and prevent power cables from being stolen in their area.

Due to the cameras being installed at different hotspots, the rangers have witnessed car crashes as well as cable theft.

Recently, they received a generous donation from two residents (who are also patrollers), who offered to purchase two additional cameras to be installed on their personal property.

Glen Roering, a resident in the area, took the initiative to purchase the camera, which overlooks the greenbelt in Honeydew.

According to Power Rangers co-ordinator and spokesperson Alison Pucci, raising funds for such top-of-the-range cameras is not easy, and thanks to a few plot owners, the majority of the funds come from their own pockets.

They also received another donation for a camera from a plot owner Paul Pretto, which will be placed in another hotspot, making it their 10th camera.

“This is very exciting for us patrollers because a lot of criminal activity takes place there. We can now reduce the number of criminal activities. If we have more cameras overlooking hotspots in the area, it’s easier to see if there is any suspicious activity, and we can call for assistance in time.

“Once we have reached our goal of erecting 18 to 20 cameras in the area, the lasting effect will benefit us in the long run as our area will be protected,” Pretto says.

The Power Rangers work together by scheduling volunteers from the community to monitor the cameras simultaneously with the patrollers in the evening.

“We are thankful for how everyone is working together as a community. We aim to get Honeydew/Ruimsig back to its beautiful, original state,” Pucci adds.
