Residents clean Florida Lake

Concerned residents of Florida and several organisations take up the challenge of ending littering at the lake.

Concerned residents around Florida Lake gathered on Saturday, September 14, at the water’s edge to make a difference and tackle the task at hand; cleaning their beloved lake.

The clean-up brought together dedicated individuals and several organisations who were determined to preserve the beauty and pride of Florida Lake.

The group focused on litter and rubbish left by picnickers, and they cleaned the bird’s island and filled up bags that were supplied by PikiTup.

The Roodepoort Record recently reported that water levels have been falling at an alarming rate at the lake, with community members claiming this is caused by the damaged dam wall.

On this day, the residents also tried to make another dam wall using rocks just to prevent the water from declining.

According to Kelvin Naidoo, one of the Florida Lake Anglers and a resident of Florida for more than 40 years, the lake is an iconic space and the pride of the community and they must take care of it.

He says the vast recreation and relaxation venue offers greater community tranquillity and natural beauty, and through this collaborative effort, they are hoping to promote a culture of cleanliness.

“This is our sports facility, and we take pride in it. We want the community to come and enjoy the lake.

“I would like to thank everyone for pitching. I also want to urge the community to take responsibility and use the rubbish bins, or travel with a rubbish bag, and try to protect our beloved from vandalism,” said Naidoo.
