SPCA blessed with eco friendly roofing project

Roodepoort SPCA gets a sustainable makeover with the Eco Paws initiative.

Nampak Liquid Cartons, Fibre Circle and Infinite Industries teamed up on August 30 to remove old asbestos roofs at the Roodepoort SPCA and replace them with eco-friendly sheets.

This was part of their Eco Paws initiative where they enhanced the animal shelter and promoted sustainability.

The teams handed over a newly refurbished 106-metre animal keel roof that is no ordinary roof. This roof is made up of recycled waste plastics, liquid board cartons and materials that would otherwise have ended up in landfills.

Moreover, these roofs will provide better insulation, keep the animals cooler in summer and warmer in winter, and are maintenance-free.

Asbestos roofs are being removed mainly because they contain hazardous material known for severe health risks.

According to Roodepoort SPCA manager Mandy Cattanach, they are very grateful for these organisations, stating that it would have been costly to remove and replace the asbestos roofs themselves.

She emphasised that the animals are now much safer with the new roofing in place, especially as the rainy season approaches, they will no longer have to contend with leaks and the animals can enjoy a more secure and comfortable environment.

In addition to the roofing sheets, Infinite Industries also donated recycling bins made entirely from recycled Polyaluminum.

Fibre Circle CEO Edith Leeuta and CEO of Infinite Industries Maggie Infante praised the SPCA for their commitment to animal protection and stated that they do not see the end of these projects and collaboration.

Maggie also revealed that 530 000 liquid board cartons were recycled to produce the roofing sheets for the first phase.
