Ruya Vision project a huge success

Children and elderly persons of Florida received free eye care from the Ruya Vision Project.

The Ruya Project volunteers provided free eye care to children and the elderly at Arthur Matthews Primary School in Maraisburg recently.

The Ruya Project is an NPO established in 2016 which offers free eye care services to the most vulnerable in underprivileged communities, specifically highlighting eye care needs in orphanages and elderly care centres.

The Ruya Project, with the help of residents and the Growth and Wellness Institute, collaborated with various organisations and individuals to bring eye care services to the people of Florida.

“The University of Johannesburg Optometry students came out in their numbers to help,” says Riaz Jogee from the project.

“In total, we catered to the eye care needs of 80 children and 20 adults on the day. Those attending had their vision screened, full eye tests done and were also invited to select their spectacle frames.”

Riaz adds that local businesses went out of their way to support the initiative.

“A local takeaway eatery sponsored delicious meals, while another business brought a jumping castle for the children. We had two businesses that sponsored some gifts for the children, and a private person who brought snacks for everyone.”
