Join the annual river clean-up

The RiverWel Residents Association has invited residents to join their annual river clean-up operation.

The RiverWel Residents Association (RWRA) is holding their annual river clean-up operation and has invited the community to lend a hand.

Weltevreden Park, or Welties, as it is better known, is a sought-after and popular area, in large part due to the beautiful greenbelts that crisscross the neighbourhood and the tranquil river that flows through it.

“Unfortunately, like anything, there is some maintenance required,” says RWRA committee member, Neville Burnett. “Hence, as residents, we have various clean-up and maintenance operations running year-round.

“Once per year, we embark on an extensive clean-up of the river. This is by far our most ambitious annual project and therefore it requires all hands on deck.

“This year, we have decided to include the area along Jim Fouchè Drive between Without and Dolfhout streets.

“We would like to appeal to residents of Weltevreden Park to join us on the day to lend a helping hand.

“Not only does many hands make for lighter work, but it is also the perfect opportunity for residents to meet and get to know each other.”

Neville adds that, since the RWRA work team has been active in the area all year long, they expect the area to be relatively clean, making for a much easier task.

“Our team of tree fellers will also be present on the day to help clear overgrown brush and debris from the river bank and under the bridges.

“Refuse bags will be provided on the day, so all you need is appropriate headgear to protect you from the sun, stout shoes or boots, a water bottle, and a pair of rubber or gardening gloves.

“We invite our friends and neighbours to come out and lend a hand on the day to ensure that our neighbourhood remains one of the most popular and sought after on the West Rand.”

The clean-up takes place this Sunday, September 8 from 09:00 and those who would like to participate can meet at the Cockspur Road bridge. For more information, contact Neville on 076 077 5585.
