FroK’s school programmes an adventure

Friends of Kloofendal host another group of school learners for an environmental walk aimed at learning.

Friends of Kloofendal (FroK) have embarked on another adventurous nature programme that is specially designed to make learning fun and adventurous for school learners.

About 90 Grade Nine girls from St Mary’s School, Waverly, were granted this amazing opportunity to walk, learn, and explore Kloofendal Nature Reserve while being guided and taught by experienced tour guides.

During this adventure walk, the tour guides covered a lot of beneficial curriculum-based content, and learners were encouraged to explore the natural environment while learning about the different plants, animals, insects, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and much more.

According to Karin Spottiswoode who is part of the FroK team, they do not only focus on curriculum content but also impact important knowledge to the learners about the importance of conserving the environment so that the next generation may have a legacy to live on.

“I focused on why we need plants and animals and made them understand that everything we eat is directly or indirectly from plants. We also spoke about how to conserve plants and the decomposition of plants and animals.

“Additionally, I showed them how the Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo is trying to reduce bush encroachment and get our local grasses to grow again because that is what our indigenous plants eat, ” said Karin.

These environmental programmes are for all grades in schools. For more information, you can visit FroK’s website.
