New RA to represent Florida North residents

A new residents association set to cover the Florida North area is on the cards.

Saturday, July 20 saw the community of Florida North descend on Hoërskool Florida to form the newest organisation to represent residents.

The formation of the area’s newest residents’ association (RA) not only adds to the existing stable of community organisations but will add another voice to their quest for clean and safe neighbourhoods.

According to resident and businessman Moaaz Areff, the area is simply too large to merge into one of the existing organisations.

“The service delivery and safety challenges that residents face daily require that we band together as residents in an organised way to address the problems that we face.

Florida Block Watch chair, John Kirsten.

“Working together with the other local organisations, we will be able to present a stronger front. That is why we as a community need to become more active, and form a legal entity that represents us and looks after our concerns.”

The meeting was attended by several Florida North residents as well as representatives from various other RAs, including the Florida Hills Residents Association, Discovery Community Forum, Florida Block Watch, Florida South Residents Association, and the Fleurhof Community Policing Forum.

Discovery Community Forum vice chair, John Gafney.

After a thorough explanation by Discovery Community Forum vice chairperson, John Gafney, on the legal requirements and processes for the establishment of a new RA, the gathered residents nominated a steering committee for the initial processes, which included the drafting of a constitution.

The residents voted to accept all seven nominees into the steering committee. The committee is tasked with completing all the initial processes for the formation of the new legal entity within 30 days, after which they will call for another public meeting during which a name will be decided on, the constitution will be adopted, and the final committee will be voted in, to lead the organisation until the next annual general meeting.

The steering committee consists of Areff, Raquel Fortune, Whitey van der Linde, Nadia Jappie, Claude Sons, Judy Strydom and Kabelo Kgobane.
