67 minutes of kindness

Organisations come together to bless St Laurence Children's Haven.

St Laurence Children’s Haven was buzzing with activities on Mandela Day as different organisations across Roodepoort united to spend their 67 minutes in honour of Nelson Mandela.

Organisations like The King’s School Discovery, PNA and Hillfox Value Centre come together to bless the haven through painting, cleaning, washing windows, spending time and playing soccer with the children and donating a lot of thoughtful goods.

According to school principal Andre Berrange, this is part of their leadership development project, and it means a lot for them to be part of a community that makes such a difference.

The children were in for a treat when they received free eye checks and examinations, and if needed, they were referred to a doctor for free spectacles.

Richard Milan, co-ordinator of the haven, says there was a spirit of Ubuntu in their home, and they’re very grateful for everything.

“We are very happy today that organisations took a fair share of their time to come and make a difference with us. We have three groups of people painting, optometrists doing checks and many interacting with the children, which makes it more fun and makes the children feel loved. This shouldn’t only be for Mandela Day, but every day is a day to make a difference,“ he said.
