Cansa West Rand goes above and beyond

Cansa West Rand provides a critical range of services for their patients.

Roodepoort resident Ashley Olson Alberts has praised Cansa West Rand for the outstanding care they provided to her grandmother during her years-long battle with cancer.

Ashley says that over eight years, her late grandmother, Hantie Robinson, who was also a Cansa volunteer, was assisted by her local Cansa branch. She eventually achieved remission but became sick again some years later.

“Unfortunately, with many branches closing, she was left without the assistance she had in the past when she first had cancer,” she says. “Her local Cansa office used to help her with various things like transport to and from the hospital, home checkups, and equipment that she needed for her treatment.

“In desperation, we sought assistance from the West Rand Branch when she fell ill again, and was informed that her cancer had progressed to stage four. The local state hospital was not especially helpful.

“My grandmother fell extremely ill and her health deteriorated drastically over a short time. Sister Monica Grove and Sister Isabel Gomes from Cansa West Rand stepped in without hesitation and went above and beyond the call of duty to assist my grandmother at home with checkups, home-based care, counselling, shakes and much more.”

Ashley adds that, even during the most traumatic and heart-wrenching times, Monica and Isabel made themselves available regardless of the time of day or night, even if it meant a long commute to get to her grandmother.

“We could not always be by her side, and it was a huge comfort to know that these highly dedicated sisters were available to provide her with the help and counsel that she needed.

“Monica has played a vital role in helping us to understand the barrage of tests and test results and diagnoses that doctors sometimes doctors do not explain in the most layman’s way. Monica and Isabel created a safe environment where patients and their families felt cared for and loved as if we were part of their family.

“In addition to medical help, sister Isabel supported us when we had to let the family know of the loss. She also assisted with guidance and counselling needed during our time of grief. Losing someone is never easy and seeing them lose the fight right in front of you is even harder. Monica and Isabel played a vital role in our family’s journey.

“We are eternally grateful for having met them and having them be part of our story and ultimately being part of our family.”
