Fatal crash claims one life

Two truck-collision leaves one dead and one in a critical condition.

On June 19, one person lost their life after two trucks collided on the busy Main Reef Road in Roodepoort around 11:00.

The accident involved a crane truck from City Power and an articulated truck.

According to City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena, their contractors were working on streetlights when they were hit by a speeding truck driver who allegedly skipped a red traffic light.

“The contractors on site followed all standard operating procedures and the area where they were working was marked through cones. The contractors also wore their full personal protective equipment,” he said.

According to JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla, the incident left one male passenger with serious injuries, while the other was declared dead on the scene.

“No injuries were reported from the occupants of the articulated truck and the body was removed from the scene and taken to the Roodepoort mortuary,” he added.

“We are saddened by this tragic incident and convey our sincere condolences to the bereaved family. We also wish the injured contractor a speedy recovery,” City Power CEO Tshifularo Mashava says.

City Power condemns reckless driving by the truck driver and believes that the law will take its course in dealing with the matter. A case of culpable homicide has been opened by the Florida police for further investigation.
