Fatal accident claims life of supplier

A tragic accident resulted in the death of a man who was to replace cables in Welties.

A routine delivery turned fatal after a man lost his life when a 300m cable drum collapsed on him.

On June 18, a supplier from an independent company was delivering a cable to Weltevrden Park following arrangements made by City Power (CP) to have cables in the area replaced.

According to West Rand Reaction Unit officers Kivesh Rajkumar and Duncan Grobler, they received a call while patrolling the area and rushed to the scene. Upon their arrival, they found the deceased’s colleagues trying to pull him from beneath the cable drum, which collapsed on him.

The deceased’s colleagues told the Roodepoort Northsider that he was trying to place an item to support the drum, but with no proper stability, the drum was too heavy and collapsed on the deceased’s head.

Emergency services Emer-G-Med rushed to the scene to assist with reviving him, but he was pronounced dead later.

This devastating event has prompted a wave of introspection within the industry, raising critical questions about safety protocols and the management of industrial hazards.

Police arrived on the scene and swiftly initiated forensic investigators to be on-site to ascertain the precise sequence of events leading to this tragic accident.

The Northsider approached the spokespersons for Emer-G-Med and CP for comment and was informed that a statement would be provided.
