Two taxis collide; minor injuries reported

Two taxis collided at a busy intersection during peak hour traffic.

Two Toyota Quantum taxis collided this morning, June 18, at the corner of Corlett Avenue and Progress Road in Witpoortjie, with about eight people sustaining minor injuries.

One taxi driver was en route to Leratong taxi rank after dropping off passengers at Wilrogate Shopping Centre, while the other was headed to deliver about eight passengers.

A security officer at the scene, Mulalo Nembulu, confirmed to the Roodepoort Record that this crash occurred at about 07:00 at the intersection, where the one taxi driver was about to make a turn, and allegedly did not stop at the red traffic lights, leading to a collision with the oncoming taxi.

“I was on my way to the township, and this taxi was about to turn, but the traffic light was red. I tried to miss him, but it was already too late, and we collided. My taxi also collided with the wall of a house on the side of the road,” confirmed one of the taxi drivers during the Record’s visit to the scene.

The taxi drivers did not sustain any injuries, but passengers were taken by emergency services to a local clinic.

The emergency services on the scene confirmed that the passengers did not seem to have serious injuries, but only X-rays will determine the state of their health.

Members of JMPD controlled the traffic and ensured a smooth operation for other motorists.
