Crowned with confidence

A Ruimsig Academy learner shines on the international stage being crowned first princess and best dressed costume.

Abigail Leonard (14) achieved a milestone recently when she represented South Africa in the Miss Star Universe pageant in Portugal in May.

The Grade Eight learner from Ruimsig Academy, whose modelling journey began at age five, took it upon herself to venture into pageantry, and as she progressed gracefully, she won overall in her category for the Mr and Miss Star Universe, making her qualify for Miss Teen International.

“I fell in love with modelling because I loved gracing the audience with my stage presence. As I grew older, it became more about meeting new people and making memories.

“I have seen the growth that comes with the hard work and dedication I put into the pageants. Pageants bring us closer together and we have become like family now,” says Abigail.

The competition saw participation from around 20 countries, and Abigail came home with two wins and memories to cherish. She was crowned first runner-up in her category and won an award for the best national costume.

“What inspired my costume was the Protea, featuring a variety of bright colours and the representation of strength, courage, and resilience, making it the perfect way to represent our beautiful country.

“My advice to young girls who want to follow their dreams into pageantry is to never let the opinions of others dictate who you are and what you are capable of. Winning a crown does not prove your success as a model, it is what you do after,” says Abigail.
