Remembering their fallen star

The life and legacy of Mpho Sebeng through the eyes of his family.

The family of Mpho Sebeng is still mourning the loss of their beloved son, brother, cousin, and friend. Mpho was a talented actor who made waves in the entertainment industry through his renowned acting skills but sadly died in a car crash on May 5.

The Roodepoort Record reached out to Mpho’s family to find out what he was like outside of the entertainment world. At his family home in Roodepoort, the Record engaged in heart-touching conversations with his family as they shared memories they made with Mpho.

Beyond the TV screen, Mpho, according to his sister Lebogang Sebeng, was the glue of his family. He was reliable, strict, protective and fun as he did not enjoy seriousness.

“Mpho was a very reliable person, I was very much dependent on him, even on small things,” Lebogang shared while expressing the kind of relationship she shared with Mpho.

“I had my 21st birthday during lockdown but Mpho showed up for me, he brought a cake and flowers with balloons for me,” Lebogang recalled. She went on to say that Mpho always showed up for her no matter what situation she was in as she was very protective of her as a big brother.

“I used to be bullied at school but I knew that once I told Mpho about it, he was going to deal with my bullies the next day.”

According to Lebogang, Mpho did not study acting but it was a skill that he harnessed over the years as he started acting at a young age. Mpho went to university and studied law and politics, but later went back to acting as it was his passion. She further added that Mpho studied acting books to polish his skills and he would also sit and watch shows to learn from other actors on how they portrayed their characters.

Joe Sebeng, Mpho’s father said, “Mpho was a naughty child but you would never find him involved in fights or any violent acts.”

His family misses Mpho very much and they will honour his legacy and steer it in the direction that he would have wanted.
