One person sustained serious injuries in a house fire in Strubens Valley on Sunday.

The house in Theophilus Avenue caught fire early on Sunday, prompting a huge response from private security companies and fire fighters, who tried in vain to save the house.

According to Fire Ops SA incident manager on scene Captain Wimpie van Staden, they received a report at 09:50 of a house on fire. “Our units were at the scene seven minutes later, and immediately set about determining whether anyone was still in the house,” he says.

“We were informed that there were four people inside the house at the time of the fire, and all but one brother had managed to escape the fire. We managed to rescue the young man from the burning house. He sustained serious burns and was transported to hospital via ambulance, while the father was treated for smoke inhalation.”

According to Van Staden, the Johannesburg Fire Department arrived at the scene a few minutes later, and rendered assistance, helping with connection to the fire hydrant.

“The house was already completely engulfed by the time we arrived, and our firefighters, with assistance from the City’s firefighters battled to bring it under control.

“Unfortunately the fire was very advanced by the time we arrived, but we managed to save the kitchen, one bathroom, and on upstairs room.

Van Staden says that the cause of the fire is not yet known.

According to BCI Security operations manager Lionel Gafney, it is suspected that the fire started shortly after electricity, which had been out since the previous day, came back on.

A campaign to collect clothes and other necessities for the family has since been started on local community WhatsApp groups.
