Changing lives and bringing smiles, one donation at a time
Successful shoe drive brings joy to the children of Itireleng School.
The Nomfundo Zondo Foundation in partnership with the EARTH Centre showed their vision for the month of love by inviting the Itireleng School for the Sever Intellectual Disability over for a visit.
They took part in different physical and creative activities.
“Doing the little that we can to give the learners that childlike experience, is what we enjoy seeing at the centre. We try to provide an anxiety-free area while teaching basic horse riding,” Angie Michna, the head instructor at the centre said.
The EARTH Centre is an NPO devoted to using horses to empower underprivileged individuals with disabilities.
“Our riders benefit physiologically from this special therapy, which also helps them navigate obstacles and chances in mainstream life,” Angie added.
The activities included an obstacle course, soccer, making sock puppets and horse riding. The children had a chance to learn about horse riding from fellow instructors from the centre.
“Mobility is very important, especially for children with physical disabilities. Horse riding allows the children’s lower bodies to become more mobile and flexible and we try to incorporate that in our sessions,” Megan Gouws from the centre said.
The foundation is also an NPO that provides sustainable development, stimulation and a caring environment to the mentally and physically disabled children to enhance their quality of life. Working with different schools for special needs and disabilities, Nomfundo spoke of how she dedicates herself to making a difference in the children’s lives as much as she can.
After having refreshments to cool down from activities, the children all received new school shoes donated by Gavin Buckle from LM Radio. The school will be doing regular visits weekly for horse riding and swimming in hopes that it will shape their minds and bodies. Both NPOs show that small actions can have a big impact.
