Taking their community back one dumping site at a time

The youth of Davidsonville came together to clean up the whole area after noticing it doesn't matter if they clean up their own yards when the rest of the community remains filled with dumping sites.

After realising the state in which their community is, the youth set out to take back their community and clean it up.

Carlos Welcome, one of the community members cleaning up the area, explained, “We were cleaning up our yards and then our street when we realised what does it help if the entrances are dumping sites. With numerous spots in our community being used as dumping sites, we have decided the stand together and clean up our community.”

Sherar Wright added just two weeks ago they found a baby’s body in one of the dumping sites.

Carlos noted they are not only cleaning up the dumping sites but the overgrown grass and bushes as well, including the area around the school. He added they do not currently have a lawnmower or a weed eater so they are hitting the grass with a pipe to shorten it. A resident of Discovery reached out and donated a few tools to get them started, aside from the donations made by their fellow community members, however, he asks the rest of the community for help with donations or tools.

The lack of a weed eater will not stand in the way of cleaning up their community.

“We are taking our community back,” stated Carlos. He added the members taking part in the clean-up initiative are all unemployed youth from the area and this initiative shows they are not afraid to work and they want to show possible employers they want to work.
