Local muso’s rock Welties

Local musicians gather at AJ's Pub in Weltevreden Park for an open mic day every Sunday afternoon.

Sundays in Weltevreden Park will never be the same. Local musicians had a rocking Sunday afternoon at AJ’s Pub’s open mic event where anyone is welcome to bring their instrument and play a tune or even collaborate in a jam session.

According to AJ’s owner Andrew van Nieuwenhuizen, the open mic Sundays kicked off about a year ago and have since proven to be a popular attraction at the pub.

“Our sound engineer initially approached me with the idea,” said Andrew. “The plan was to give local musicians, both professional and amateur, an opportunity to, in a social and relaxed setting, network with each other, and play a few songs onstage.

“On any given Sunday, you will find well-known names in the local music scene playing alongside people who normally just play in their bedrooms – and having a whale of a time. It is free of charge, and all you have to do is report to the sound engineer when you get there on the day, and he will allocate space for you in the line-up.”

Many friendships and musical collaborations have been forged at the open mic Sundays over the past year or so, and by the looks of it, this event is set to grow even bigger in the next year. Musicians from all walks and genres, from rock and roll to blues, jazz, and pop make the most of the opportunity to get their music out there and to entertain the crowd at the same time.

Guitarist Jim Quarry entertains the crowd.

If you are a music fan and you are looking for something to do on a Sunday afternoon, why not head to AJ’s situated at 72 Rinyani Avenue from 14:00 for a rocking afternoon?
