Rest Ur Ass hosting donkey derby

The Rest Ur Ass Donkey Sanctuary will be holding a family fun day featuring a donkey derby and a market on 27 January.

If you are looking for something fun and exciting to do over the weekend, why not visit the Rest Ur Ass Donkey Sanctuary’s Hobby Donkey Derby on Saturday, January 27?

According to Yolanda le Roux from the sanctuary, the Hobby Donkey Derby promises to be a fun day out for young and old. The whole family can take part in making their “donkey”, and racing it in the derby. Not only is it something fun and exciting to do for the whole family, but it is also for a good cause. Money raised from the derby is used to feed and care for the sanctuary’s many rescued donkeys.

The derby also features a vibrant market with more than 100 stalls stocking everything from homemade wares to delicious food.

Most people don’t realise it, but donkeys are one of the most widely abused animal species worldwide. Outside of petting zoos, donkeys are used in rural areas worldwide to pull and carry heavy loads. In many cases, they are worked to the point of complete exhaustion every day, with little to no attention being given to their general well-being. Once they’ve reached the end of their productiveness, they are simply discarded, or even killed and eaten.

Rest Ur Ass Donkey Sanctuary was started in 2017 with the sole purpose of saving abused donkeys and providing a home for them where they can live out their days in comfort, surrounded by other donkeys, in what essentially amounts to a utopia for donkeys. The sanctuary now consists of three different premises all within the Ruimsig area, and their residents number well over 100 donkeys, a small herd of sheep, a pair of rescued pot belly pigs, a couple of geese, and a bunch of very cute dogs.
