Florida Lake Canoe Club members share their favourite Christmas things

In the spirit of Christmas, the Roodepoort Record spoke to members of the Florida Lake Canoe Club who told us how they would be spending their Christmas and what some of their favorite things to do around this time are.

LUNA ELHAGE – 8 YEARS OLD – GRADE 2

1. How do you celebrate Christmas in your family/ culture?

I usually spend Christmas long weekend with my mom’s family one year and other years with my dad’s family – and we have lunch, cakes, sweets, ice cream and swim.

2. How are you spending Christmas?

This year I am going to KZN with my dad and his family to swim in the sea and rock pools but we will also have a big lunch when I come back with my mom and her family!

3. Some recipes to try out for Christmas?

My grannies help me, and we bake small cakes – granny makes the dough and I roll them and flatten them and decorate them with icing, and little faces then we put icing caps on.

4. Favorite Christmas movies to watch?

Jack Frost

5. New Year’s resolutions?

I want to learn to ice skate and do well in aerial gymnastics.

BAILEY SAMS – 6 YEARS OLD – GRADE RR

1. How do you celebrate Christmas in your family/ culture?

We always spend Christmas Day with as many family members as possible with a lovely braai/ lunch, pool and presents, cousins, and sometimes very special friends too.

2. How are you spending Christmas?

This year we are flying to St Francis Bay to visit my Nana and grandad.

3. Some recipes to try out for Christmas?

Granny helps us to make plain biscuits like elves and cakes and Xmas fairy then we decorate with coloured icing sugar and sprinkles.

4. Favorite Christmas movies to watch?

I love A Very Merry Pooh Year – Winnie the Pooh at Christmas time.

5. New Year’s resolutions?

I’m going to try hard to remember to listen to mommy and daddy, and not be naughty!

Chane Steyn – 12 years old – Florida Primary School – canoeist at Florida Lake Canoe Club whose mom and dad help with indemnities, registrations, and coaching. Have done many canoe races at different dams including long 10km marathons and short sprint races.

1. How do you celebrate Christmas in your family/ culture?

We go to my granny’s house as a family gathering and celebrate Christmas with lunch and presents.

2. How are you spending Christmas?

We are going to a restaurant this year with my granny and family.

3. Some recipes to try out for Christmas?

1 x batch quick chocolate cupcakes
1 x batch buttercream icing
Green food colouring
2 tbsp cocoa powder
Smarties (to decorate)

To study harder and do good in school.
