Roodepoort mountaineer first to receive Mountain Club South Africa’s Mountain Award in 16 years

Roodepoort mountaineer receives first Mountain Award in 16 years after summiting the infamous K2 mountain earlier this year.

Local businessman and mountaineer John Black, alongside his fellow mountaineer Warren Eva, has recently been awarded the Mountain Club of South Africa’s (MCSA) esteemed Mountain Award, which hasn’t been awarded for more than one and a half decades.

According to Paul Carstensen, president of the MCSA, the Mountain Award is awarded to members of the MCSA for significant achievement in mountaineering and/ or rock climbing, whether over an extended period or for a single outstanding achievement.

Black has been a member of the MCSA for around 22 years.

“They supported our team of four [John Black, Warren Eva, Robby Kojetin and Allan Dickinson] to K2, the MCSA also supported my expedition to Mount Vinson in Antarctica, where I completed the seven summits challenge,” explained Black.

Black explained that he and Eva received the award, mainly for the First South African Ascent of K2 last year, but also in recognition of their mountaineering accomplishments over the years.

This was a great honour as the award is only given to mountaineers who have made an outstanding contribution to the mountaineering community.
