Honeydew Community Policing Forum meets to tackle crime issues

Honeydew residents recently attended the annual general meeting with the Honeydew Community Policing Forum in a bid to challenge criminal activity.

An annual general meeting with the Honeydew Community Policing Forum took place on November 29 with a discussion on ways to tackle issues related to crime within the community.

The CPF has these meetings in all sectors in a bid to communicate issues within the community and to discuss current trends with residents being encouraged to attend these meetings.

While there have been many challenges, recent successes showed that one suspect has been prosecuted for armed robbery.

“The accused received 10 years of imprisonment, and another received 12 years,” Michael Steyn, the public relations officer for the forum said.

Residents had their turn to propose ideas.

According to Michael, there has also been an increase in vehicle-related crimes within the community. Theft from and out of motor vehicles as well as theft of motor vehicles are currently some of the biggest contributing factors to crime within the Honeydew community.

“This is especially the case within the Weltevreden Park area. We want to urge residents to not leave valuables like laptops lying in the car. Also, don’t move it to the boot once you park your car as criminals see it, and it makes you an easy target,” Michael said.

There was also a discussion about the increased damage to City Power infrastructure and an internal meeting between role players from the police, JMPD’s infrastructure unit, and CPF will be set up in a bid to challenge these criminal elements.

The meeting also saw discussions relating to how residents can keep themselves safe and not fall victim to crime as shopping malls have also been highlighted as hotspots for crime-related activities.
