Local up-and-coming artist shares his experience

Horizon View-based rapper shares insight into his world and advises those hoping to make a career out of music.

Keegan van Rooyen, better known as Thug Guru, grew up with instruments, however, he is now using his voice to entertain the masses.

He explained he has had an interest in music since the age of four, but only released his first single this year. His father was the one to introduce him to musical instruments, first traditional drums then he expanded. He however explained he was never a singer.

“This year I started writing my first track. I’ve just been playing instruments my whole life and jamming to music and then I don’t know what happened, I didn’t want to be in a band, so I thought I’m going to be my own band, let’s try it out and it’s going well,” Keegan said.

He is currently working on singles to tease the album he is set to release, however, the date is not yet known.

With his music, he hopes to tell people ‘you do you’ and not to care what others think. He noted not everyone would like his music, some might and others wouldn’t. He added that ‘if you are nervous or scared, push through it’. His motto in life is to not be a thug but to live a thug life.

He continued his inspiration comes from the music of this day and age. Even though it only took him two hours to write the song he released, it took a while to format and put the song to the beat.

Keegan explained the success of his song gives him motivation to continue what he’s doing.

To up-and-coming artists, he advises, “Focus, stay consistent. You can’t just write one song because the first song you write isn’t going to be the one you’re going to release you have to get a construction going, a whole body. No matter how scared or how nervous you are, you need to push through it regardless. For my music video and my first performance, I was so nervous if someone had given me the out, I would have taken it. If they said you don’t have to do it, I would have been like I’m not doing this. Both times ended up being the best nights of my life.”
He extended a thank you to Shelton Forbes and his DJ J RAM.
