Two foals born at Rest Ur Ass Donkey Sanctuary

Two beautiful foals were born at Ruimsig's favourite donkey sanctuary after the rabbit hemorrhagic disease rampaged through their rabbit population.

After a harrowing time dealing with the Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease, which took out almost all of the bunnies at Rest Ur Ass Donkey Sanctuary (RUA), new life has bloomed.

Two beautiful and healthy foals were born in the first weeks of November, a jack and a jenny.

Their mothers were rescued along with a group of almost 20 donkeys from Phalaborwa earlier this year.

“We do not breed donkeys at RUA, but these jennies were already pregnant when they arrived at our sanctuary –needless to say, their offspring were born in a much better place,” explained Yolanda le Roux from the sanctuary.

The donkeys they rescued from Phalaborwa were rumoured to have been lion food if RUA did not intervene and take them in. Now they live life as happily as possible.

The jacks have all been gelded, and although they strictly take in donkeys from less-than-ideal conditions and give them the best life possible, the two new additions named Mila, from mom Maya, and Clover, from mom Ellie, have brought nothing but joy to those at the sanctuary.

“We had a very hard time dealing with the deaths of our rabbit population, doing everything we could to try and save them, and even now we are still self-isolating to ensure that the disease does not spread from where it took out bunnies left and right,” explained Lloreen le Roux, “now these births feel like a light at the end of this dark tunnel, a silver lining if you will. They will be raised with love and lots of donkey friends to play with.”

Unfortunately, the sanctuary has had to stop all their on-site fundraising events until they are given the clear that the disease has been eradicated from their property. With this in mind, Lloreen has organised a fundraiser at Barnyard Silverstar.

“Please join us, it is going to be lots of fun!” exclaimed Lloreen, adding that there will be lots of prizes to be won.

“The funds raised will all go to the long ears in our care,” explained Lloreen. The community is encouraged to book their tickets by contacting 084 611 0089 or 073 207 6432.
