Local gymnastics club calls for donations to repair building

The dilapidated state of the building poses a safety hazard for gymnasts and Lefido therefore calls on the community for urgent assistance.

The Golden Lions Club calls on the community for assistance with repairs to their beloved gymnasium.

Lefido Acrobatic Gymnastics Club is a community upliftment project in Johannesburg, aiming to produce South African and world acrobatic gymnastics champions of children from underprivileged areas.

Established 24 years ago, the club has become one of the best in South Africa, representing South Africa at national and international events with The Golden Lions participating in inter-club competitions and regional trials – all self-funded. To help these children, the club engages in fundraising events and sponsorship partnerships.

Littering near the building.

According to Claudia Coreejes, head coach of the club, they are responsible for renting a building from Johannesburg City Council, covering all fees, salaries, equipment costs, cleaning, repairs, maintenance, and security.

“The club faces financial challenges due to the Covid-19 pandemic, with parents struggling to afford club fees and expenses, including coaching, training, competition entries, and travel. The club’s facilities, particularly the roof of the building, are in dire need of repair to ensure safety and protect equipment, as the lack of funds has led to financial strain,” she said.

The dilapidated state of the building.

Some of the issues identified include the burning of tyres by the public near the gym which causes blackened floors and soot, requiring professional cleaning. The building also lacks fencing and financial struggles, causing smoke and damage to equipment. Multiple roof leaks cause wet equipment and stained carpets.

“Companies have assessed damages and estimated costs for roof repairs, ensuring safety for children, staff, and equipment,” Claudia said.

The company received estimated costs from three to four companies, ranging from R20 000 to R30 000, and said they hope their appeal will be considered. They also hope it will lead to a mutually beneficial relationship for the optimal development of young South Africans through acrobatic gymnastics.
