Scores show up for Cansa Shavathon

The annual Cansa Shavathon was held to raise awareness around cancer for which proceeds go to the NPO’s outreach programmes.

A 21st Cansa Shavathon was held at Horizon Shopping Centre on November 12 which saw cancer supporters pulling up in scores for a shave, hair colour and donations in support of Cansa.

The Shavathon is held annually throughout the year and is done to raise awareness around cancer while raising funds for the NPO’s organisational resources, needs and support programmes which go towards its nine homes around the region.

According to Corrien Roro, project co-ordinator of Cansa, the event was the first of its kind at Horizon and said they aim to make it bigger and better going forward. The target was to at least accumulate R2 000 for the day.

The Roodepoort Record spoke to a few people who attended in terms of why they are so passionate in supporting this cause and Eileen Nettman said that she wants to do it for somebody who she knew had cancer.

“I did it once, it was a liberating experience to know that you are thinking of and helping someone fight a battle with cancer,” she said.

Astrid Heradiem said that she lost a family member to cancer and has since been an avid supporter of causes such as this.
