Old age home celebrates 70th birthday with a fête

The Roodepoort-based old age home has become a haven for senior citizens and celebrated its 70th birthday in fundraising spirits.

Floroma Old Age Home celebrated its 70th birthday with a fête on Saturday, November 4 in a bid to commemorate this important milestone.

The morning started with a bit of gloomy weather, however, it did not stop the festivities at Floroma which was a general buzz of excitement that saw various stalls set up and music by DJ Natasha who serenaded the old folk. There was also a raffle and pick-a-box to raise funds.

Among the crowd was resident Pam Lord who has been at the home for 13 years now and said that she thinks the home renders a very good service – everyone went through a lot of trouble and is extremely grateful for how they take care of them and wished them the best. Another resident, Joanne Jerome has been living there for 12 years now and said that she was enjoying the celebrations.

The Roodepoort Record also spoke to Jennifer McArdle, daughter of the founding member of Floroma who said her father, Jack Reid was involved in the construction of cottages at Floroma. He served as chairperson of the management committee and raised funds to build the frail section of the home.

“His passion for helping others and his involvement in the organisation taught him the value of time and love. The author’s father’s legacy lives on in Floroma. I wish the management committee and staff the best and hope they continue to help others in the next 70 years,” Jennifer said.
