Discovery Primary presents reading with rhythm concert

The foundation phase concert was to celebrate the school’s literature heritage through song, dance, and play.

Discovery Primary Full-Service School held a reading with rhythm concert for its foundation phase learners in October as part of celebrating its heritage with literature.

This was its first concert since Covid-19 which saw Grade R to Grade Three learners performing plays from children’s books, making use of instruments, singing, and dancing with rhythm and movement.

Zaylyn Kelly, Royal-Reign Rodrigues and Scelo Sikhona.

According to Yolandie Conradie, co-ordinator of the concert, committee educators were asked to make use of its fully equipped library to find poems, rhymes, or short stories for learners to perform.

“The excitement from our learners created such a buzz in our school and performing in front of their peers boosted their self-confidence,” she said.

Among the guests who were invited and treated were senior citizens from the old age homes and retirement villages in the community with some light refreshments for the full-dress rehearsal.

Holly Holland and Noah Shamase, Grade One A.

“They enjoyed it and thanked us for the opportunity to view our little ones. The outing and change of scenery made them feel special. Some of their children and grandchildren also attended our school,” she said.

The concert tickets were sold out for all three nights and there was a gala event for the last concert where the audience was surprised with a flash mob as all learners came into the hall and danced together.

Unathi Jonathan and Dakalo Chauke, Grade Two C.

“Even our principal joined in on the fun. We believe in mass participation and no child was left behind,” she said.

The goal is to entertain the audience and make reading fun by showing everyone the power of making storybooks come alive.
