South Road open again after quite some time

The road was closed while JOSHCO added water pipes to accommodate their new housing facility.

After being closed for months, while water pipes were being put in, South Road is becoming a regular driveable road again.

Ward 71 councillor, René Benjamin explained the road was closed while the Johannesburg Social Housing Company (JOSHCO) were adding water pipes to accommodate the residents of the new housing project they were working on.

The project had to be connected to the water and power system in the area. To ensure there isn’t an overflow of water that has to pass through the stormwater system, a retention pond was added that will then gather the sewage before it goes through the outlet into the system.

She explained this prevents the flush of water that could damage the roads or block the pipes, instead, everything flows down slowly into the system, which means if there is a lot of sewage to be passed through it won’t affect the surrounding areas. Further, they added a few kerb inlets to the stormwater drain to prevent flooding.

She added that the housing project will be a welcome addition to the neighbourhood as it will offer 70% housing to residents and 30% to external residents. There are 333 new units with the ground floor accommodating those with disabilities. She continued there are certain criteria people will have to meet if they are interested in a unit, however, she hopes it will help residents of lower income brackets and the nearby informal settlement.
