An elderly woman in Discovery recently celebrated her birthday at a pensioners’ tea and spoke to the Roodepoort Record about how she feels about achieving this important milestone.
Patsy Bezuidenhout, who turned 90 on September 28, was born in 1933 and has lived a good life. Her five children – three girls and two boys – produced 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She was born in the south of Johannesburg, lived in Cape Town for a while, and at the end of the Second World War moved back to Johannesburg, where she met her husband and got married at the age of 19 and became a housewife.
Except for a few self-proclaimed “slow days”, she is still in good health and keeps everyone on their toes.
“Like anyone my age, I do have days where I feel a bit slow, but I get up and do what I need to do as I cannot sit still,” she said.
She looked after her family until they all got married and one by one moved out of her house to have their own families. She is now a widow and lives comfortably with her youngest son and his family.
