Open manhole along General Pienaar Avenue cause for great concern

During the day the open manhole in the middle of the sidewalk might not be as big a concern, however at night it becomes a different story.

A sixty-one-year-old resident was injured after falling into an open manhole.

Ralph Nicholson, a resident of Grobler Park, explained that his hip still hurts after falling into the open manhole located along General Pienaar Avenue between Haynes and Jan van Rooyen Street on September 23. He noted it happened around 20:00, which is why he couldn’t see the trap.

He stated his foot fell inside the hole, while his hip hit against the side of the hole.

Ralph Nicholson couldn’t see the manhole at night.

He continued luckily only his hip was hurt and he didn’t break his neck, because when he fell his head jerked back and he could hear a cracking noise.

Nicholson further stated there are two more open manholes further down the road near PicknPay where not only people, but cars can also fall into.

Ward 71 councillor René Benjamin said: “I will ask the urban inspector to go check it out and log them with JRA.”
